Brown leaves and colder days: Austin is finally having a real fall! And like every week, MIX/VHS has a great eclectic mix of recommendations for you to sink your teeth into (or rather, watch with your eyes + ears). We hope you enjoy!

Used Car Commercial // 1996 Honda Accord

WATCH IT HERE!

Max Lanman made this short commercial to help his girlfriend sell her 1996 Honda Accord. It was posted on Nov 2nd of 2017, and has since been viewed almost 5 million times. It definitely brought back some tape-deck converter memories for me. If you’re in the market for a new/old car, check out his site, Luxury is a State of Mind.

Channel Zero: The No End House

WATCH IT HERE!

It feels like I’m the only one watching this show (besides Kyle), which kind of adds to its mysteriousness.  It’s based on a Creepypasta, and the atmosphere is so great.  The first season did such a good job of dragging me in and almost putting me in a trance, which was super ironic due to the subject matter, but this second season is even better.  I’m about 5 episodes into this 6 episode season, and I cannot wait to see how it ends this evening as I end my binge.

Ghosted // Get Some (feat. Kamille)

WATCH IT HERE!

Ghosted’s single Get Some has such a high energy and rhythm, balanced carefully with hilarious and campy visuals in their music video. It is a loving homage to classic 80s monster flicks, of the likes of American Werewolf in London, The Howling, and even the Thriller music video. Highly addictive song and beautifully fun music video.

Alucarda

WATCH IT HERE!

Alucarda is an 1977 Mexican horror film directed by Juan López Moctezuma. Recently, I have become obsessed with cult Mexican horror films. As a an attempt to dig deeper into my cultural roots, I need to touch on one of my first brushes with Mexican horror.

I first saw this film in high school and fell in love! Of course, as a teenager, I was definitely drawn to cult cinema – the weirder, gorey-er and more occult-themes – the better. Alucarda, which is Dracula spelled backwards (+ a), follows a young girl named Justine and her arrival at a convent. After a series of odd events, Justine meets a new seemingly mysterious friend, Alcuarda. Together, like good besties do, they worship satan, become demonically possessed, and together decide to throw in some blood sucking vampirism just for fun.

Fair warning: this film has sex. Lots of sex. Lots of sex and blood. Oh, and satan. Lots of satan.

Starman // Mike Edwards & The Chamberlings

WATCH IT HERE!

Meet Milky Edwards & the Chamberlings, the 70’s soul group that grabbed headlines in 2012 when three needledrop videos hit YouTube, playing tracks from David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. These are powerful, infectious versions of the tunes, but it turns out the band never was, and the videos are an elaborate hoax. It’s the cover art that gave them away – as The Guardian reported, the titles are a modern typeface, and not handlettered, as would have been the case. Nevertheless, the recordings met with the approval of Mr. Bowie himself, who issued a congratulatory post on Facebook. The Internet is home to many mysteries. We can only hope that someday Milky Edwards will reveal himself–or, better yet, release additional tracks from the album.
