MIX/VHS | Week 037

Is anyone else blown away that it’s already August next week? Not that summer really ends in August here in Austin, Texas, but as “fall” is right around the corner, things have been incredibly busy at Austin School of Film and Austin Cinemaker Space. NEVER THE LESS! The crew at MIX/VHS has still got time to recommend great content for you to check out! Hope you enjoy!

Jimmy V’s 1993 ESPY Speech

WATCH IT HERE!

Jimmy Valvano leaves an everlasting impression of hope in his ESPY speech from March 3, 1993. He died just a month after giving the world a timeless reminder of how one can overcome anything with enthusiasm and a motto from his cancer research foundation; “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.”

WATCH THE TRAILER HERE!

This Friday, HBO releases a late night anthology series, brain child from Mark and Jay Duplass.  I got a sneak peak at the first episode entitled “Ralphie” at the ATX TV Festival, and while this first episode packs quite the creepy punch in the best way possible, the brothers have said this anthology is actually genre fluid and will feature multiple contributors and some up-and-coming indie filmmakers.  The connecting factor week-to-week is that it always takes place in the same hotel room.  Outside of that stipulation, pretty much anything goes.  Sometimes we’ll even be going back and forward in time by decades, and they hinted there could be some entities that revisit their old haunt.  Leaving us with the amazing feeling during our next hotel stay ‘if these walls could talk’.  Ironically enough, I’ll be staying in a hotel for an out-of-town shoot this weekend when it airs…

James Bay // Incomplete – Tessandra Chavez x Tim Milgrim

MixVHS - Incomplete Tim Milgram x Tessandra Chavez

WATCH IT HERE!

How do you capture movement on camera? There are a lot of dance videos where the presence and emotion of the piece is lost in life-to-screen translation. It’s nice to find a video where that isn’t the case — the moving parts of the choreography and music of Milgram and Chavez’s “Incomplete” are enhanced by the camerawork. There are so many different stories happening at once being mixed together into an amazing sequence. The piece breathes. Please watch this piece in a dark room.

The Devil’s Backbone

WATCH IT HERE!

Due to the Criterion sale bleeding dry my bank account, I figured I should start watching some of the blind-buys I have been making lately. Guillermo del Toro’s 2001 haunting film The Devil’s Backbone is, if I may be so bold, his best work to date. It is terrifying, brooding, beautiful, tense, and filmed at such an ease, that it makes me crave more of del Toro’s pictures from his earlier work. Go into the film blindly as I did, if you can. The film will stick with you long after you have finished it, as it is emotionally chilling down to the core.

WATCH THE TRAILER HERE!

Been on a health kick lately. Which got me into a conversation with my mid-80 year old Grandparents about vitality. Which then reminded my Aunt to recommend this documentary to my grandparents. Which then lead led my entire family to sit around the living room of my aunt’s house during my brother’s 20th birthday to watch a documentary about vitality. All that aside, this incredibly endearing, funny, inspiring documentary, directed by Rob Reiner, is great for anyone at any age concerned with growing old and how to live your best life. Spoiler Alert: the happiest people? They keep moving. Watch the full documentary on HBO!
